Memphis Yeshiva Invitational

CESJDS Lions Squeak Past Fasman Yeshiva 42-37

A Friday morning Tier II game featured a matchup between CESJDS Lions and the Fasman Yeshiva. Fasman had a nice 5-0 run to start the game, with Yedidya Rossenwasser draining a three and Yaakov Mendelsburg getting a bucket inside the paint. The Lions responded with a run of their own, eventually gaining control of the game and forcing Fasman to call a timeout when they trailed 9-7. Fasman came right back, though, thanks to great free throw shooting from Mendelsburg. The two teams were neck and neck all quarter, and when the 1st quarter buzzer sounded, Fasman was up 14-11.

The second quarter began with Mendelsburg scoring inside the paint, and Dani Miretzky hitting two free throws. As Fasman regained control, it was hard to believe they were the 16 seed in the tournament. They were strong on both ends of the court, with Miretzky and Mendelsburg leading on offense, and everyone contributing on the defensive end.  The Lions couldn’t get anything to fall, scoring just 4 points all quarter. The half ended with Fasman up 26-15.

The third quarter began with a strong start from the Lions, who went on an 8-0 run, taking the momentum into their hands. Mendelsburg and Miretzky responded with a few buckets, but after a three from Daniel Offer, the Lions took a two point lead. The Lions were back, leading 36-30 when the 3rd quarter came to a close.

In the fourth quarter, the Lions held onto the ball, passing it around and wasting time. They held onto their lead six point lead by not scoring but also not allowing Fasman to get any points on the board. Finally, with under 3 minutes left in the game, Jacob Stein hit two free throws to cut the lead to 4. The Lions responded with a three pointer from Max Stravitz. Mendelsburg got a bucket down low, but it was matched by two free throws from Zev Katz with a minute to go. The game went back and forth in the last minute, but the Lions had the slight edge, taking this one 42-37. Zev Katz led Fasman with 18 points, and Yaakov Mendelsburg led Fasman with 17.
