Joining Coach Josh Pastner of the University of Memphis Tigers, and Chris Wallace, General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations for the Memphis Grizzlies, Dr. Ed Weiner will participate in the 2010 Cooper Yeshiva High School National Invitational Tournament.

Ed, a native New Yorker, was a basketball All American at the University of Tennessee (UT) in 1955. He was a two-time All-Southeast Conference (SEC) selection and led the U.S. Maccabi Team to a gold medal in the 1953 Israel Maccabean Games. Ed was selected the 27th overall pick in the 1955 draft by the Philadelphia Warriors. After playing for a year in the NBA, Ed retired to pursue a career in Dentistry.

Ed remains a celebrity on the campus at the University of Tennessee and lifelong friends with NBA Hall of Famers Bob Cousy, Dolph Schayes, and Coach Red Auerbach, to name a few. In 2009, Ed accompanied the U.S. Maccabbi Team to Israel and served as an Honorary Assistant Coach during the team’s gold medal run. He is listed amongst the “Great Jews in Sports” and is archived by many publications including “The Encyclopedia of Basketball.”

Ed masterfully tells the story of how playing top level college hoops as a Jew immersed in the bigotry and anti-Semitism of the deep south motivated him on and off the court. After his presentation, Ed will join the Tournament for lunch and will be available to speak personally with the participants .
