11-6-2014 | Weinbaum Storm Breeze Past Chicagoland Tigers, 54-45

The 4th game of the Cooper Invitational featured the #4 seed Chicagoland Jewish High School Tigers against the #13 seed Weinbaum Yeshiva High School Storm. The tip went to the Storm, but the Tigers defense held up. The Storm got off to a fast start, as they forced turnovers and put points on the board with fast-break points. As a result, the Storm started the game on an 8-0 run.

During the early stages of the game, both teams played an up tempo style. Both teams also showed the press early, and the Storm did a very nice job breaking the press, but the Tigers struggled to get into a groove. At the end of the 1st quarter, the Storm led 11-4 over the Tigers as the Storm had a very balanced scoring effort.

In the 2nd quarter, Weinbaum got off to a fast start jumping out to a 17-4 lead. Weinbaum’s defense was nothing short of fantastic in the 1st half, giving up just 14 points. At halftime, Weinbaum had a 26-14 edge over the Tigers. The leading scorers at the half were Josh Newlander with 7 points for the Tigers CJHS and Evan Jacoby of the Storm who had 6 points.

At the start of the 2nd half, both teams played solid defense, and held each other scoreless for the early stages of the half. Towards the end of the 3rd quarter, The Storm had extended the lead out to 33-19, and by the end quarter the score was 39-21.

Although the Tigers trailed, they kept on fighting and with about 4 minutes to go, the Tigers cut their deficit to 8 points at 44-36. With 0:59 left, the score was 48-42 and the ball was in the possession of the Tigers. But the Storm was managed to halt the rally and hung on to win and upset the Tigers by a score of 54-45. Josh Newlander led CJHS with 26 points and Jacob Danis led the Storm with 10 points.
